I had this side exorcised out of me once, in high school. I’ll talk about that experience in a sec.

INFJs typically hate confrontation, and I think this may have to do with the fact that we’re always internally covering every corner of a possible scenario rather than calling upon our reactionary instincts. Needless confrontation is almost like a failure to us - at least, that’s how I perceive it. It could certainly be our fault, but if I’ve learned anything about people, it’s that they’re often careless with their approach and more concerned with feeling good and being right than solving a problem or evolving themselves. I always see people acting foolishly because they think with their emotions and not their logical minds, and it leads to a lot of unnecessary conflict among people. We’re pretty much nature’s mediators. We’re the cooler heads that prevail. But despite our levelness, sometimes our emotions reach that boiling point. This isn’t exclusive to our type of course, but I think the way in which we express it may have more to do with how we function.

It was 2003 - a full decade ago, now. There was this girl who obviously had problems at home stemming from either abuse or insufficient attention growing up. The thing about her is that you didn’t know if she was abused or not because she was the kind of person who would exaggerate issues or completely make things up for the attention. Yes, she was one of those lovelies that everyone has come across at least once in life. She was always stirring up drama and trying to cause conflict seemingly just to hear her own voice and make sure people noticed her. Anyway, she decided to target my girlfriend at the time for petty reasons that I can’t even recall (probably a misconceived “glare” or something that existed squarely in her mind). My girlfriend, whom I’d type as an ENTJ, was as intolerant to high school drama as I was. She was a very independent, very smart girl, and she knew EXACTLY what this chick was doing. We both took the “ignore her and she’ll go away” approach, which usually works.

My then-girlfriend yelled at her once in the hallway for purposely bumping into her, and that lead her to keep harassing us nonstop. I kept my cool with it for as long as I could. One day, during lunch, she said something incredibly insulting to me about my girlfriend (I can’t remember what she said). I, the quiet shy kid who never raised his voice once in school, snapped right then and there…and it was glorious. The above quote about INFJs going nutso is what reminded me of this story.

I’ve never been so verbally well-composed in my life. Being an introvert, as any one of us will tell you, we have to reach in to properly express ourselves. We’re the ones who pause a lot and try to not say “um” 40 times as we process information and convert it to coherent speech. As I was screaming at this girl at the top of my lungs, everything became clear to me. In a span of maybe 20-30 seconds, I dissected her right there in the middle of a crowded lunchroom. I told her what she was, I explained why she was doing it, and I told her just what I thought about it. There was no reaching back into anything, it was all on the tip of my tongue, and it was the most eloquent verbal lashing that lunchroom has ever seen. My anger was so concentrated that it allowed me to open my heart and let out that darkness mentioned in the above quote. I was raw, and all the hatred I built up over the years for stupid, disrespectful people was bestowed upon her.

As I came down, I came back to reality. I returned to my shell as every nearby table was staring at me. My friend was across the table, and he was in total hysterics and what he just witnessed. I was shaking, I couldn’t pick up a fork for a few minutes. He was beat red, laughing, because he knew she had it coming and he couldn’t process what just happened. Nobody saw that in me. I knew it was there all along, but how would anyone else know if you’re always well-mannered and non-abrasive? It was as scary as it was liberating to be able to properly deconstruct someone like that. When most guys get mad, they get low and start using ugly words and resort to the chest-puffing bravado that ultimately makes you look like a massive tool. While my spiked hair at the time and general angst made me look like a tool no problem, this public slaying not only gave me respect, but it also caused the girl to leave me and my girlfriend alone from there on out.

And you know what? I actually wish her well. I hope she cut the b.s. out, got it out of her system and found a more positive way to get attention.

In closing, there’s a side to everyone that you rarely, if ever, see. I have an anecdotal theory that everyone has a sleeping giant within that they struggle to let out either by personal restraint or by their inability to free it. If someone were to commit suicide, it was that sleeping giant within them being filled with hopelessness over time, and when they finally figured out how to let it out, it consumed them. If someone unlocked how to gain the confidence to chase their dreams and take the leap of faith into a better life, that’s a positive example of a sleeping giant being awakened on the world.

My sleeping giant is passion. Passion for doing what’s right, passion for preserving the things I most love, passion for the arts and for the meaningful things that move and evolve you. As I demonstrated, that passion is also a blinding hot hatred for the things that take the aforementioned things away. I used to think of myself as a cynic, but perhaps the subtle differences between a cynical, negative person and an optimist who realizes the world isn’t evolving like it should are asimilar and harder to decipher.

The End of Porcupine Tree?

While it’s been obvious over the past year or so, it’s been officially announced that Porcupine Tree are now on the dreaded indefinite hiatus. The original plans were for PT to take a break after their Radio City and Royal Albert Hall gigs in 2010. 2011 was going to be Steven Wilson’s solo gig year, where he made his second solo album, Grace for Drowning. I can recall SW mentioning in interviews that he didn’t know exactly when PT would reunite, but perhaps towards the end of 2011 or early 2012 they would get back together and see where they were at with things.

2012 came, and nothing came of anything. SW instead went touring with his newly founded solo band. I think most of us figured he was on roll with these guys (they’re a wonderful touring act) and SW just wanted to capitalize on that momentum. But after we patiently waited more, SW announced plans to work on a third solo album immediately following Grace. The writing was on the wall at this point - Porcupine Tree were initially going on a break, but as soon as SW began touring with his new band, that completely changed his direction as an artist.

SW has since recently announced that as of April 2013, he was going to continue his solo career & pursue scoring films, and that Porcupine Tree were on an official hiatus. This doesn’t change much, they were always on break, but now there are no longer plans to get back together like it initially was planned.

It’s upsetting to hear, but I respect his decision. I wouldn’t want SW to reunite with the guys of Porcupine Tree half-hearted, wishing he was making his solo music tailored for his new band. That would’ve just lead to conflicts and would negatively impact the long-awaited 11th album.

I think a reunion is inevitable, but I no longer expect them to ‘resume’ their work like before. SW is an artist, and he now has a band who with little compromise play HIS music. I’m surprised he didn’t start the solo career sooner (Cover Versions and smaller bands, aside). This might be his way of making up for lost time, and despite his youthful looks, he’s not a spring chicken anymore - I can totally see why he’d want to do this or score movies over Porcupine Tree at this point in his life.

I’d love an 11th album, and I’d love to see them at least one more time. I hold onto hope they’ll get back together one day in the near future and do one or both of those things. Porcupine Tree deserve to go out in a performance to last the ages long after their true departure. They deserve to have the best live performance ever captured, in 4K resolution, full of their most famous songs alongside their cult favorite 90s gems. I hold onto hope that at the very least we’ll have that to look forward to one day.

While addressing Cesaro’s current placement in WWE, Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio Monday night that company brass believe that the former Ring of Honor standout is “boring,” resulting in his slide down the card. Some in WWE, however, are not in favor of the demotion, and believe Cesaro should be a headliner.

While Cesaro engaged in a match with Kingston two weeks on WWE Main Event that was well-received by management, it failed to alter his standing in the organization. Meltzer noted, “They don’t see him any higher than they did two weeks ago. There was lip service paid there for a week or two, but it’s over now.”

In 2012, I went to Universal Studios in both May as well as in December. The May trip was a last minute extension of our Disney trip, so when I went back in December, I made it a point to do and see more things. In this video, through the magic of post-production, I’ve combined both trips into one mostly seamless compilation. You’ll see The Simpsons ride, Harry Potter’s “Forbidden Journey” ride and surrounding attractions, some interesting scenery, and loads more of things I felt worthy of including into this near half-hour video.
